Miles taps his fork at breakfast, drums his knees at his desk, and spins while he waits in line. His teacher, his mom and his dad all say the same thing: sit still. Then one Friday he watches a fifth grader named Dion dance in the school gym, and his feet start moving before he tells them to.
He signs up for the talent show. A kid on the blacktop says boys don't dance like that, and some kids laugh. So Miles practices in the garage every night, tripping over the lawnmower and getting back up, until the routine is his. His big sister Nia catches him and tells him his left arm is late on the spin. His friend Tariq says it's actually kinda cool.
On the night of the show, the dance isn't perfect. But Miles means it, and the whole gym can tell. That night he stands in front of his mirror and says the words that matter more than anything anyone else said: "I'm so proud of me."
